Annoying More Than Impressive

That’s the way I’m feeling about both my new laptop and Face Up Gaming.

New laptop has reminded me why I prefer custom built to off the rack.  In addition to all the Win 7 security features that make the damned OS a pain in the ass to use I kept getting all kinds of pop ups from Lenovo’s proprietary “Solutions Center” software.  Frankly I find computer manufacturer’s proprietary software for “helping” me out and automating updates and other such stuff a royal pain in the ass.  I’ll decide what I want to do with my computer and what software I want on it, Thank You very much.  It’s bad enough Mr Softy is designing its OS for people who have no idea on how to actually operate a computer other than to push an icon without giving reasonably knowledgeable users the ability to get rid of the idiot defaults easily but with the manufacturers adding their shit on top it’s even worse.  To add insult to injury you can’t even wipe out the hard drives and start clean because no one gives you installation disks any more, it is all put on a partition on the hard drive and any reinstallation is just going to reinstall the bullshit.  Setting this thing up may take longer than I thought.

As for Face Up I went to sign up tonight to be ready for tomorrow.  Originally had no problem, everything went fine.  However when I tried to get to the lobby there are really no instructions on how to get there.  I hit the Play Now icon finally and another screen popped up but was blank.  So I log out, reboot and try it again.  Go to sign on and nada, doesn’t recognize me.  Come on, I was just logged in.  I do the forgot password thingee just to see what happens, since I had just signed up I hardly forgot my password, and it tells me no such email in the database.  WTF, I was just logged in.  I ain’t being impressed here.  I go to re-enter the info as a newbie and it won’t let me use my table name now.  Says someone else has that name.  Yea, me under the account you said doesn’t exist.  So make up your frikkin mind.  How can my nickname exist but my account doesn’t?  Ain’t giving me great hope for the playing software if the registration software is this buggy.  Anyway I get on the live chat help, a feature I do like, and tell someone what is going on.  She tells me to wait a min and then to re-register.  I do and again I get the “can’t use the table name” message.  Explain that and she says reboot the browser, which I do to no effect.  She then tells me that I should try another nickname.  Well duh, I know that but as I’m coming in to this thing as a blogger I would like to have the name I usually blog under rather than something strange.  Her response is, “well, you can always use a number”.  Yea I could and eventually did but considering no one is actually using wolfshead I would much prefer to keep using that.   My pleas fall on deaf ears however and I eventually give up and use the number.  While this is going on the webage keeps locking up on me, another ill omen when it comes to running poker software.

I then ask how to get to the lobby and she says to use the Play Now icon.  Did that, blank screen I respond.  She then tells me you need Flash Player 11 to run the software.  Ok, no biggee but you would think that would be listed in nice big letters somewhere on the opening web pages for those whose computer might not be up to date with the latest Flash version.  So I load up Flash Player and finally get in to the room.  The interface itself isn’t too bad.  Ran fairly smooth and no real glitches.  Points game I tested it out on wasn’t exactly a great test as it was 500 chips and 5 min levels but then again it’s a free account and they’re about making money.  How the subscriber’s games go I can’t tell as I’m not signing up without a lot more testing.  I ain’t paying to play turbos and faster, not worth it to me.  Had two problems with the interface at first.  one, the chat wouldn’t work for me and as the box was greyed out I thought maybe that was a membership only feature but when I went back in to the live help and was told that it should work I noticed someone else had typed something in and got it to display.  The grey background was normal as the typeface was white.  Tested it myself and now it worked.  Have no idea what went wrong or right but it was working.  Let’s face though, for a blogger battle working chat is a definite necessity.  The grey dialogue box ain’t such a hot idea though since something greyed out on a computer usually means not available.  Main problem was the betting interface.  There is a slider bar and a box with the bet amount in it.  Slider was only advancing the bet by onesies.  Takes all day to make a sizeable bet so I tried typing in my bet in the box but it wouldn’t take it, just stayed as is.  Even hilighted the number and hit backspace or delete to try and get rid of it.  Nothing doing.  Cost me a couple bets because as I tried to change the number the damned thing timed out and automatically cecked for me.  If I can’t figure out how that damned thing works, or if that is the way it works this site may wind up a non-starter for me.

Will report further after some more play and the blogger game tomorrow. BTW, there were 53 entrants last I saw.  Looks good.   Thanks for the listen.

New latop finally here, Lenovo ThinkPad Edge E 530.  Nice machine though not exactly a real portable one.  Fast though.  Probably take a few days to get set up the way I want it though so maybe awhile before the story continues.  Also now that I got it I may be doing a bit more contract work which could occuoy more time.  Just what I need but having to get a set of wheels and replace 3 computers so far this year I need the bucks.  May break it in playing Al’s tourney tomorrow.

Thanks for the listen
